    Nationmaster just took an old copy of the real John Doe article at Wikipedia, which has since been updated with even more names, and put some ads around it.

    in Italian you also use Tizio, Caio e Sempronio when you have to refer to a number of people (they come straight from Latin). A more casual version of Mario Rossi (a proper name and surname) is Pinco Pallo or Pinco Pallino, which in turn don’t exist - and could not, actually.

    come to think of it, there’s also Tal Dei Tali (Mr. So And So), more formal than Pinco Pallo but equally fake.
