Simply engaging: Yellow Freight’s brand identity

Posted by Jay on May 12, 2003 at 5:18 pm | 19 Comments

Yellow FreightFor more than seventy-five years, Yellow Freight Lines has stuck with one of the simplest and most engaging color schemes ever devised. Their trucks and logo are orange, and their logo consists only of the word “Yellow,” with no additional information. When you stop and think about it (we all have), that’s engagement.

Another shipping company, UPS, is currently promoting its corporate color, brown, as its new nickname: Brown. Well, at least for another week or two.

FYI: It’s 2005, and the Brown slogan is doing fine. Sorta odd, but it seems to work. Also, more convenient than U.P.S

Yellow freight still sucks. My car was hit by one of your trucks a few years back in front of many witnesses. The driver lied to protect his pathetic self. Thanks to the management and your self insurance policy to screw people I had to pay to fix the car myself. I could have sued as your manager suggested knowing that it would cost me more time off work than the amount of damages.I prefer a different solution. To engauge in a positive promotion of your competitors to all my customers with shipping needs. Since that time I have successfully guided two of my customers to use other freight companies exclusivily, and will continue to do so. Thanks for screwing me out of around $1100

I worked at yellow freight for a short time late in 2005. Didn’t take long to figure out that the terminal manager was a complete liar. Basically the managers will do or say anything to apease you and then turn around and say that they never said anything like that. I would steer clear of their trucks and their freight service.
    sorry about your car.

    hi
Sorry for your bad experience with Yellow. I worked for them for close to 20 years. The problem is it is such a hugh company they do get some bad eggs. Because of the union it is very diffcult for them to throw out the bad eggs. They do have a lot of good eggs and a lot of people that work very hard… and even go far beyond of their job to try and help the customers. It is kind of like the news media…you only hear the bad news. They never talk about the good news. Their is a lot of good in Yellow even among the teamsters. Its just the bad eggs really smell very bad. I got tired of the oder myself…but I still have a lot of friends at Yellow. If Yellow could ever get all of the teamsters to go to work and give a 100% it would be the very best company and beyond any freight company in American.

Sorry to hear about your car, Mike. I am very frustrated with Yellow Freight as well. Their tracking system sucks! I work for a distribution company and we drop ship almost everything from the manufacturer. Yellow Freight can never give me proof of delivery on anything we ship since we’re not listed as the shipper. We are an $80M company and as of today we are shipping nothing Yellow Freight.

how funny, guiding your customers to other carriers! mike you should know all freight companys are basic carbon copys of each other. so your pathetic attempt at getting back at yellow does nothing but to increase yellow’s business! i know your confused, so let me explain the basics to you. first of all, yellow’s claims payout is unrivaled in the freight industry, meaning most damaged shipments are claims paid back to the shipper. secondly, excluding some regional lanes, yellow’s coverage, and transit times continue to set the standards for the freight industry. no other LTL freight company in the US can say this. i’m sure your customers will eventually come back to YFS as they realize the differance in service. that is thanks to your ignorance. the question is, will your customers come back to you, who is motivated by anger, and frustration? by the way, Yellow owns Roadway, and most of USF.

But most Trucking Companys work with color Logo’s Viking is Blue, CF is Red and Green, Yellow well is Yellow, Roadway is Orange & Blue etc.

Talk about brand….how about making up a game to find the arrow in the FED EX logo. My 13 year old has played it for years driving around town and has all of his friends knowing how it goes. Seems stupid, but just like the old slug bug game it can really embed a brand into a generation.

Unfortunately my company deals with Yellow Freight. To this date, they have yet to show up on time…. sometimes hours, sometimes days.

Are you people so pathetic, that all you got to do is whine about a truck line. I think you all are from Yellows competition. I know the guy with the car is a liar, because they have a no questions asked policy about claims uto $500. Anytime there is a claim by a accident it is automatically Yellows fault until proven differently. So get a life whiners!

My experience with Yellow Freight has been less than desirable, to say the least. We used to ship with Yellow pretty much exclusively, until I got sick of them not showing up and never calling to say they couldn’t make it. The way our shipping and receiving area is set up requires a short truck w/ a liftgate, NOT a tractor trailer. Every time I’d place a pickup request with specific instructions to bring a truck w/ a lift gate, they’d send a tractor-trailer, and these poeple have been here numerous times and know the layout. I stopped using Yellow for about a year because of this, however, I thought today I’d give them another chance. When I called customer service to place the pickup request, the man called over to dispatch to make sure they had liftgate trucks available before he entered the request, and was told there were 6. Low and behold, a tractor trailer was sent instead. When the driver called dispatch, he was told they couldn’t accomodate us today and would try tomorrow. The customer is already chomping at the bit over receiving his shipment, and is under the impression that it would definitely ship today. Thanks, Yellow. I see you still suck and undoubtedly always will. You could have made quite a bit of money from us if you had your shit together. I’ll be making sure I tell all of my contacts not to use your service. And since Rick was so kind to list what companies are associated w/ Yellow, I will be stearing clear of them as well. Brag about your coverage area and transit times all you want. That stuff doesn’t matter when you don’t show up for scheduled pickup requests.

Hmmm, what will be the brand identity for Yello and UPS when UPS purchases Yellow?
